Were Schools Better or Worse in the Old Days?

Alvah and Forglen Community Council has arranged for Alistair Mason to give a talk on education in Banffshire over the centuries.

Alistair is Secretary of the Banff Preservation and Heritage Society, and played a large part in publishing The Book of Banff and Banff Through Time. He is also Secretary of the Banffshire Field Club, so his interests are wider than merely the history of the town of Banff.

His subject arises from the fact that 100 years ago Dr Barclay, the great editor of the Banffshire Journal, published a book called Schools and Schoolmasters of Banffshire. This is a work of rare research on every parish in the county, and filled with fascinating detail about what it was like to go to school in the old days. There are many comic touches, some real scandals, and many examples of courage and triumph against the odds that would bring a lump to your throat.

Come along to the Talk at: Alvah Parish Hall, Linhead
on Tuesday 6 October 2015 starting at 6.00pm

Admission Free
Refreshments will be provided.
